Wine Tourism Degustation Lunch
On 30 August 2009 twenty-four students from the Gateway Schools to Wine Tourism project were given the opportunity to show off their creative talent at the annual Degustation Lunch weekend at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism, Stanthorpe. Brett's Wharf Executive Chef Alastair McLeod provided invaluable advice and training and real life work experience to students from Kingaroy, Laidley, and Stanthorpe State High Schools, Nudgee College, Scots PGC and St Joseph's College.
The menu included exotic dishes such as Pristine Oysters, Brioche encrusted salmon with zucchini flowers and orange and vanilla dressing and Valrouhna Choc Creme Brulee with bushmills strawberries. Members of the public enjoyed the chance to taste the rewards of their training, the fresh local produce and wine produced at the QCWT by the Young Winemakers.
As a result of the participation in the lunch, one student from Nudgee College has been successful in gaining work placement for a week at Brett's Wharf.
Young Winemakers Program
Budding winemakers have kicked off their training for 2009 with the Young Winemakers Program. The program offered to wine tourism students through the Gateway Schools Project provides a complete winemaking experience, from the vineyard to the bottle. With the assistance of Queensland's leading winemakers, students are given expert advice and direction in all aspects from picking and crushing grapes, scientific analysis and testing, bottling, labelling, cellar door and retail.
Students are able to participate in 3 different forms of the program this year giving realistic winemaking experience and valuable employability skills.
