Students and teachers of gateway schools have many opportunities to participate in agribusiness related activities in and out of the classroom. Gateway Schools also understand the importance of informing their students and the community about the issues and challenges the Australian agribusiness sector faces.
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program
Gateway to agribusiness students at Jandowae State School are progressing well with the implementation of their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Project. The gardens are planted and harvesting is beginning soon, giving students a practical understanding of agriculture and environmental issues through an innovative and hands on approach.
Gateway Schools success in Hermitage Plant Science competition - "Grains of success"
Students from across Australia have been rewarded for asking "what's that grain in my food?".
Gateway Schools to Agribusiness students at Jandowae Prep-10, Downlands College and St George State High were rewarded for their hard work and knowledge by taking out many of the major prizes and proved they can compete with the best in Australia.
Entries from 41 schools around the nation were received for the 2009 Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries' (QPIF) Hermitage Research Station Schools' Plant Science Competition. A record number of 209 entries were submitted, making it the highest number of project entries in the competition's 13 year history.
As a result of the 2009 competition more than 15,840 students from Prep to Year 12 have an increased knowledge of grains for human consumption.
The main goal of the plant science competition is to stimulate an interest in science and agriculture in young people and to express to children that science is a great, long-term and rewarding career choice.
Competition topics are related to research carried out at the Hermitage Research Station, Warwick by the QPIF and Education Queensland staff provide assistance by ensuring the topic and tasks complement the school science curriculum.
